Monday 10.6.14

Night Train celebrates Mad Hatter Day (!) and the birthdays of pianist Norman Simmons and guitarist Mark Whitfield. Plus more for the October Jazz Noir feature – this time with music Herbie Hancock wrote for the neo-noir film, "Blow-Up", and Norman Simmons’ version of “Harlem Nocturne,” which was used as the theme song for the Mike Hammer TV show. Then, in hour two, it’s the start of Monday Night at the Movies specials in conjunction with the October feature – tonight a look at the scores of the early classic films noir.

Tuesday 10.7.14

Tonight on the Night Train, classic recordings from Miles Davis and Bill Evans - music from 2014 NEA Jazz Masters Keith Jarrett and Richard Davis, tributes to the noir sound of Chet Baker from both Luciana Souza and Eliane Elias, and vocalists Ernie Andrews and Lucy Smith.

Wednesday 10.8.14

Night Train marks the birthday of adventurous trumpeter Steven Bernstein with music he did on the new album with Henry Butler and the Hot 9, Roswell Rudd and Sexmob. Plus more noir sounds for our October feature – this time including Ahmad Jamal’s version of the classic theme song from Laura. And in hour two of the show, a Savannah Music Festival special featuring Henry Butler.

Thursday 10.9.14

Night Train celebrates birthdays of several jazz artists who incorporate a variety of world influences into their music – saxophonist Kenny Garrett, vibes player Dave Samuels, multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef, South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, and Cuban father and son pianists Bebo and Chucho Valdes who also share a birthday. Plus new music from vibes legend Bobby Hutcherson, the Ted Rosenthal Trio’s tribute to Gershwin, and guitarist Steve Khan.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
