Maize School District Begins Work On $70M Improvement Project

USD 266

The Maize School District is breaking ground today on the first in a series of projects funded by a $70.7 million bond issue that voters approved last June.

The bond is the largest and most extensive measure the Maize community has ever passed for USD 266. District-wide improvements include the addition of tornado-safe rooms at Maize High School and a new transportation facility.

Lori O’Toole Buselt with USD 266 says today’s ceremony at Maize Middle School will not only kick off work at that school, but also begin a wave of projects including a new Early Childhood Center and a Career and Technical Education Center.

“This is the start of something that should really set us up to have a safer and better school district for everyone in our district, from infants all the way up to high school seniors," Buselt says.

The operating budget for USD 266 has been cut more than 15 percent since 2009. Buselt says the bond issue takes pressure from operational costs off of the district’s general fund and allows schools to use that money on curriculum and in the classroom.
