McPherson Pharmaceutical Plant Settles Gender Discrimination Complaint

Wikimedia Commons

A pharmaceutical plant in McPherson, Kansas, has settled a discrimination complaint that was filed by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The U.S. Department of Labor has found that the Hospira plant in McPherson, which manufactures generic injectable medicine, including IV fluid, discriminated against women in its hiring practices three years ago.

The federal government claims that qualified female applicants were hired much less frequently than similarly qualified male candidates.

Hospira, which is owned by the global pharmaceutical company Pfizer, has agreed to pay $400,000 in back wages to 145 female applicants who were denied positions. The company will also hire 11 new female employees.

Pfizer doesn’t admit liability, saying in a statement that Hospira employs a diverse workforce and that they’re paying out lost wages to "close this matter from 2012."
