Monday @ The Movies - Jazz Noir, Latin Jazz, Jimmy Heath, Vijay Iyer, Arild Anderson & More

Monday 10.24.16

It’s another Monday Night at the Movies tonight on the Night Train, joining Global Village and Strange Currency every Monday night this month to highlight film related music. Tonight it’s film noir – with music from these post-war dark classics performed by Gerry Mulligan, Dmitri Matheny and the Jazz at the Movies Band – and a special in hour two exploring the scores of film noirs.

Tuesday 10.25.16

Tuesday’s Night Train celebrates birthdays of veteran saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trombonist Robin Eubanks, trumpeter Terumasa Hino and pianist Franck Amsallem. Plus more Latin jazz sounds for the October feature – this time with some different influences courtesy two pianists – from Venezuela Luis Perdomo, and from Argentina, Emilio Teubal, along with a Latin jazz classic from the new Havana Blue project from the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble.

Wednesday 10.26.16

Night Train marks birthdays of organist Mike LeDonne (including music from a new album, just out, called That Feelin’), pianist and ‘Genius Grant’ recipient Vijay Iyer, trumpeter Eddie Henderson and third stream pioneer Jacques Loussier.

Thursday 10.27.16

Night Train marks birthdays of guitarist Philip Catherine, bassist Arild Andersen and pianist David Hazeltine, along with more Latin jazz for the October feature from Brazil’s Eliane Elias, the new album from the Clare Fischer Latin Jazz Big Band and Afro-Peruvian jazz pioneer Gabriel Alegria. Plus new music from One for All, Pat Metheny, Gregory Porter and Abbey Lincoln.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
