After two unsuccessful albums with the band Big Star behind him, former teen idol Alex Chilton returned to the studio in 1974 to make new music. Armed with a series of his own songs and a few from Big Star drummer Jody Stephens, the sessions resulted in a record that has long been known as Third or Sister Lovers. Featuring dark and unnerving songs such as “Holocaust” as well as love songs such as “For You,” the record, which virtually no one heard until the early 1990s, may be Chilton and Big Star’s finest hour. A new boxed set chronicles the evolution of the record. Titled Complete Third, the set follows the songs from the demo stages, to early mixes to the finished product. We’ll hear selections from that release as well as music from Seemed Like a Good Idea, a collaborative effort from singer Petra Haden and songwriter Jesse Harris.

Innocence Reaches is the fourteenth studio album from Of Montreal. Critics have praised the record, stating that the band sounds re-energized and re-focused. We’ll hear selections from Innocence Reaches as well as new music from another veteran rock act, The Pixies.
Thursday, August 25
Having performed in loud, aggressive bands such as Live Skull, Uzi, and Come, Thalia Zedek has been making quiet, introspective records under her own name for over a decade now. The latest of those is Eve. We’ll hear selections from that recording on this episode of the show as well as music from E, Zedek’s new band with Jason Sanford of the band Neptune and Gavin McCarthy of the group Karate.

Initially released in 1985, We Care A Lot was a self-financed recording from San Francisco-based band Faith No More. With some indications of the eclectic, genre-hopping style the group would further develop in the decades to come, the album is sometimes flawed but remains essential listening for fans of the always-inventive group. We’ll hear selections from that release on the episode of the show as well as music from Scambot 2, the latest release from Mike Keneally.
Saturday, August 27
Real is the latest recording from singer-songwriter Lydia Loveless. Although still informed by the Americana sounds heard on previous Loveless outings, this new release shows a wider range of influences and sounds. We’ll hear from it as well as music from The Travel Guide.
Monday, August 29
Released in 1995, The Blue Moods of Spain was the debut album from the Los Angeles based “slowcore” band Spain. We’ll hear selections from that recording as well as music from Cowboy Junkies.
Tuesday, August 30
Vegetable Head is the debut recording from Miki Moondrops. Featuring guitarist David Lord (Francis Moss), this project features the singing debut of bassist Miki Masuda. We’ll hear selections from this recording as well as music from Sit Still by the band Daydream.
Wednesday, August 31
Released in 2008 Same Old Man found singer-songwriter John Hiatt looking back on a career filled with a wide range of experiences, from time spent opening for the likes of John Lee Hooker and John Hammond, Jr. to the process of aging itself. We’ll hear selections from that recording on this episode as well as music from John Lee Hooker’s It Serves You Right To Suffer.
