More Billie + Birthdays of Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, Tito Puente & More

Night Train continues the April Billie Holiday centennial birthday celebration and also marks birthdays of vibes great Lionel Hampton, Mambo King Tito Puente, guitarist Issi Rozen, and bassist Avishai Cohen. Plus new music from tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, drummer Quincy Davis, and pianist Dave Bass.

Tuesday 4.21.15

Night Train marks birthdays of guitarist Mundell Lowe (including a classic song he did with Billie Holiday) and trombonist Slide Hampton (with a special in hour two featuring him at the Savannah Music Festival with Bill Charlap) – plus Jose James’ new tribute to Billie Holiday, the latest from pianist Harold Mabern with special guest vocalist Gregory Porter, and the People’s Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City – the headlining band at this year’s Wichita Jazz Festival.

Wednesday 4.22.15

Night Train celebrates birthdays of two great bassists – Charles Mingus and Paul Chambers (including work he did with John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Clark Terry). Plus the month-long celebration of Billie Holiday’s centennial continues, along with music from artists with upcoming concerts, and new music from trombonist Steve Turre, pianist Aaron Goldberg, and guitarist Dave Stryker.

Thursday 4.23.15

Night Train heads to the west coast for some classic and contemporary sounds from that part of the country. Among the artists featured – Charles Brown, Art Pepper, the L.A. Treasure Project, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton and Chet Baker.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
