Night Train highlights vocalists Shirley Horn, Joe Williams, Jeff Baker and Billie Holiday, along with classics from Cannonball Adderley, Art Tatum and Freddie Hubbard. And Rez Abbasi’s Acoustic Quartet does a Chick Corea/Return to Forever favorite for the June Chick Corea feature.

Tuesday 6.14.16

Night Train continues the June Chick Corea feature with music from the first Return to Forever album and the Manhattan Transfer’s Chick Corea Songbook release – plus in hour two of the show, a special about the breakthrough Miles Davis fusion album, Bitches Brew, that featured Chick Corea as part of the lineup. Plus birthday salutes to bassist Marcus Miller and pianist Kenny Drew, Jr. and new music from the Yellowjackets and Renee Rosnes.

Wednesday 6.15.16

Night Train marks birthdays of jazz vocal cult favorite Nancy King, guitarist John Hart, bassist & composer Kai Eckhardt, and piano great Erroll Garner (including a Jazz Profiles special about him in hour two of the show). Plus more from Chick Corea for the June feature (this time with Return to Forever) and music from Pat Metheny’s new Unity Sessions.

Thursday 6.16.16

Night Train continues the June Chick Corea feature with music from Chick with guitarists – including Al DiMeola, Pat Metheny and Paco de Lucia – and a cover of the song that was the title track of Corea’s debut album performed by guitarist Steve Masakowski. Plus new releases from guitarists Will Bernard, Julian Lage, Andy Brown, and Curtis Robinson – and classic tracks from guitarists Melvin Sparks, Joe Pass, and George Benson. Night Train also offers a small musical tribute to the late Muhammad Ali with “Rumble in the Jungle” from Max Roach’s M’Boom.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
