More Islands – Indian Ocean, Dominican Republic, French Antilles + Papa Wemba & Balkan Sounds

Monday, June 12

Global Village continues the June Islands feature with a visit to islands in the Indian Ocean, including Madagascar, Zanzibar, Seychelles, Comoros and more. We’ll hear music from the Culture Musical Club of Zanzibar, sega from Claude Vinh-San, the Seychelles All Stars and Nawal. Plus new music from the Zaire 74 compilation, Cape Verde’s Elida Almeida, and a compilation from the German-Turkish Uzelli label.

Tuesday, June 13

Global Village continues its June Islands feature with music from the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti and is famous for its son, bachata and merengue music. We’ll hear those styles, Dominican-influenced jazz and more in this show from such artists as Juan Luis Guerra, Luis Vargas, Joan Soriano, Michel Camilo, Wilfrido Vargas and Johnny Pacheco.

Wednesday, June 14

Global Village remembers one of the great voices of African music, Papa Wemba, for his birthday. The show features music from Zaiko Langa Langa, a popular group he cofounded and where he first rose to stardom; with his acclaimed Viva La Musica lineup; as a special guest with Manu Dibango and as part of the Big Blue Ball project from RealWorld; and in covers of his songs from Africando and Juan Luis Guerra.

Thursday, June 15

Global Village highlights brass and other bands from the Balkans, and some artists and bands from other parts of the world inspired by them. Among the artists featured – Romania’s Fanfare Ciocarlia, Serbia’s Boban & Marko Markovic Orkestar, Macedonia’s Kocani Orkestra, Slovakia’s Balkansam6el, and American groups the Raya Brass Band, Slavic Soul Party & Cocek! Brass Band.

Friday, June 16

Global Village continues the June Islands feature with a visit to the French Antilles. We hear some early beguine music, and the popular sounds of zouk, chouval bwa and more from such popular groups and artists as Kassav', Malavoi, Kali, Dede Saint-Prix and Zouk Machine.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
