Night Train highlights ‘new standards’ and tribute albums tonight – including Tierney Sutton’s celebration of the music of Joni Mitchell, a Joni cover from Claire Martin and music from Mitchell’s standards album, Both Sides Now – also the Trio of Oz doing Stone Temple Pilots; Deep Blue Organ Trio with a hit from Rufus; Benny Golson’s celebration of the tenor in jazz; Steve Turre’s salute to trombonists who were part of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers; and Carmen McCrae with music of Billie Holiday.

Night Train continues the July feature celebrating the guitar in jazz (for Charlie Christian’s centennial birthday) with a birthday salute tonight to guitarist Phil Upchurch – with music he did as a leader, and with guitarist George Benson, Ben Sidran, Joey DeFrancesco and the Jazz Soul Seven. Plus new music from the Funky Organics, Brian Charette, Herlin Riley, and Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
