More Jazz Noir And Birthdays Of Pharoah Sanders, Art Tatum, Bill Charlap And More

Monday 10.13.14

Night Train marks birthdays of saxophone great Pharaoh Sanders, vibes man Johnny Lytle, legendary pianist Art Tatum and bass great Ray Brown. Plus a classic track from trumpeter Clark Terry and more music for the October ‘Jazz Noir’ feature including another Monday Night at the Movies special, this time exploring the connections between jazz and film.

Tuesday 10.14.14

Night Train highlights some giants and great singers of jazz, including Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Betty Carter and Carmen McRae. Plus new music from the trombone ensemble Jazzbonez, guitarist Bobby Broom, guitarist and bassist John Webber, and singer Cyrille Aimee. And more for the October Jazz Noir feature, with music from the Jazz at the Movie Band’s White Heat-Film Noir album, and West Coast jazz from Gerald Wilson, Shelly Mann, and Buddy Collette.

Wednesday 10.15.14

Night Train continues with more Jazz Noir sounds for the October feature, this time including music from Peter Gunn and Mr. Lucky, Charlie Haden Quartet West’s Big Sleep inspired album, Always Say Goodbye, and Stan Kenton. It’s also the birthday of acclaimed pianist Bill Charlap and hour one of the show features music he did with his trio, both live and in the studio. Then in hour two, Night Train heads to the Savannah Music Festival for a performance Charlap did with saxophonist Houston Person.

Thursday 10.16.14

Night Train marks birthdays of trumpeter Roy Hargrove, trombonist Ray Anderson and drummer Mark Walker. Four impressive new albums from vocalists (Tierney Sutton, Dee Daniels, Barbara Morrison and Mansur Scott from Great Voices of Harlem) are also featured. And there’s more for the October Jazz Noir feature – this time from the jazz-drenched film, I Want to Live, and also from some of the greats of L.A.’s post-war Central Avenue jazz scene, including Teddy Edwards (with neo-noir singer Tom Waits) and Charles Mingus.
