Night Train marks birthdays of saxophonist Virginia Mayhew, guitarist Bruce Forman, and pioneering soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet (including a Jazz Profiles special about him in hour two of the show). Plus more for the Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month feature – including music from Dave Brubeck’s Jazz Impressions of Japan and an Indo-jazz piece from saxophonist Ron Holloway. And there’s new music from trumpeter Eddie Henderson, the Devin Kelly Organ Trio, and the Brubeck Brothers Quartet.

Tuesday 5.15.18

Birthday salutes to pianist Ellis Larkins (with Ella Fitzgerald and at Maybeck Recital Hall), bossa nova pioneer Oscar Castro-Neves, and saxophonist Grace Kelly (including a performance at the Newport Jazz Festival with Phil Woods in hour two) tonight on the Night Train. Plus new music from Kenny Barron and Kate McGarry, and for the May Asian Heritage Month feature, selections from Terumasa Hino and Yuko Ito.

Wednesday 5.16.18

Night Train marks birthdays of drummer Billy Cobham, jazz vocal great Betty Carter, and Woody Herman (including a special in hour two about the Four Brothers lineup after Herman). Plus more music for the May Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month feature, this time from the Taal Tantra Experience and pianist Michika Fukumori – and new music from the Steve Gadd Band, Bill O’Connell, and Benjamin Boone with poet Philip Levine.

Thursday 5.17.18

Night Train continues the May Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month feature with an Asian piece from Pharoah Sanders, music from a Grammy nominated project from Anthony Brown’s Asian American Orchestra, and a raga inspired piece from pianist and composer Lewis Porter. We also mark the birthday of alto sax legend Jackie McLean, including a Jazz Profiles special about his life and music in hour two of the show.
