Global Village celebrates the birthdays of reggae stars John Holt (of the Paragons) and Michael Rose (from Black Uhuru) and highlights new reggae albums from Ziggy Marley, Taj Weekes & Adowa, and Jah Works. Plus more music from July featured artists Santana (from the Welcome and new Santana IV albums) and the latest from Carrie Rodriguez and Oumar Konate.

  

Tuesday, July 12

Global Village highlights some global drums this time – including pioneering Nigerian drummer Olatunji (with special guest, July featured artist Carlos Santana), legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen (on the new Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra album), Henry Cole with the Afrobeat Collective, and Taiko drums join Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble (on their new album, Sing Me Home). Plus new music from Haiti’s Lakou Mizik, Scotland’s Breabach, and Snarky Puppy’s Bill Laurance.

Wednesday, July 13

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Latin, Latin rock and Latin jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo. Among his many credits is work with Global Village July featured artists, the Santana band, and the show will highlight music he did both with Santana and as a leader. Plus new music from Snowboy & the Latin Section, and the Rough Guide to South African Jazz and Rough Guide to Brazilian Jazz compilations.

Thursday, July 14

Global Village celebrates Bastille Day with a show devoted to music from France. Along with traditional music and musette, the show highlights French world music groups, and artists from different corners of the world, often former French colonies, who now call France home. Among the performers featured – Lo’Jo, Paris Combo, Kanda Bongo Man, Manu Dibango, Bibi Tanga, and Maurice el Medioni.

Friday, July 15

It’s a dance party this time in the Global Village with music from Nigeria’s William Onyeabor, South Africa’s Mahotella Queens, soca star Arrow, Latin funk pioneers Mandrill, Canada’s world beat SoulJazz Orchestra, and Latin jazz legends Eddie Palmieri and Mongo Santamaria.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
