More Saxophones – New Releases, Classic Recordings & Specials For 3 Jazz Giants

Monday 11.17.14

Night Train marks birthdays of trombonist Roswell Rudd and bassist Ben Allison, and continues with more music for the November saxophone feature, including new music from saxophonist Steve Kaldestad and from James Farm with saxophonist Joshua Redman, along with a classic from Charlie Parker and in hour two of the show, the first of a two part Charlie Parker Jazz Profiles special.

Tuesday 11.18.14

Night Train marks birthdays of singer and NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan, trumpeter Don Cherry, songwriter Johnny Mercer, and saxophonist Benny Wallace – and continues to spotlight the saxophone for the November feature – this time with music from Ornette Coleman, Jeff Coffin, Don Wilkerson, Art Pepper and, in hour two of the show, part two of a Charlie Parker Jazz Profiles special.

Wednesday 11.19.14

Night Train marks birthdays of saxophonist Vincent Herring and pianist/composer Kenny Werner, with music from their most recent albums – plus more for the November saxophone feature, including new music from tenor player Houston Person and also selections from baritone artists Claire Daly and Gary Smulyan.  Then in hour two of the show, it’s a Jazz Profiles special featuring one of the greats of the baritone saxophone, Gerry Mulligan.

Thursday 11.20.14

Night Train marks birthdays of saxophonist Don Braden, pianist Geoffrey Keezer, and singer June Christy. Also more saxophone sounds for the November feature – this time from baritone and Latin jazz player Ronnie Cuber, and tenor players Rusty Bryant and Buddy Tate – and, in hour two of the show, to mark his birthday on Friday, a special saluting one of early giants of jazz saxophone, Coleman Hawkins.
