More Stevie Wonder, Songlines Awards Week, Scotland & Sun Ra’s Birthday

Monday, May 18

Global Village highlights women of Africa this time, including acclaimed Malian singer Oumou Sangare; Dee Dee Bridgewater from her Malian-inspired Red Earth album; the last album from Cape Verde’s Cesaria Evora; Brazilian singer Ceu; and the Juno Award-winning tribute to Miriam Makeba from Lorraine Klaasen. Also listen for music from the acclaimed Cajun band Beausoleil, Buena Vista Social Club member Eliades Ochoa, and a Latin soul rarity from Flash & the Dynamics.

Tuesday, May 19

Global Village explores the world music sides of Grace Jones, Kyle Eastwood and Sonny Fortune for their birthdays. The May birthday feature for Stevie Wonder also continues (with music from his classic Music of My Mind album) and a week-long salute to the nominees and recently announced winners of the 2015 Songlines Music Awards. This time we'll hear from Best Artist winner, Tony Allen.

Wednesday, May 20

Global Village heads to Scotland for music from a wide range of artists from traditional to contemporary, veterans to rising stars, including John Martyn, Old Blind Dogs, Karine Polwart, Big Country, 2015 Songlines and BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards nominee Julie Fowlis, and Glasgow-born Mark Knopfler from his new album, Tracker.

  Thursday, May 21

Global Village celebrates the birthdays of Stevie Wonder (the May feature), guitarist Marc Ribot, and English folk great Martin Carthy. Plus new music from Mbongwana Star (with former members of Staff Benda Bilili), and music from the Gloaming, one of the nominees in the 2015 Songlines Music Awards, which are being highlighted throughout this week on the show. 

Friday, May 22

This time Global Village not only spans the planet, but heads out into the solar system to celebrate the birthday of visionary jazz artist Sun Ra. Plus  more for the May feature celebrating the 65th birthday of Stevie Wonder and for the week-long salute to the 2015 Songlines Music Awards nominees and winners, including Baka Beyond, Ibibio Sound Machine, Robert Plant and Kronos Quartet.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
