A New Feature & New Month/New Music Time

Monday, February 2

Global Village kicks off a new month’s feature – highlighting music from Grammy Lifetime Achievement honorees – this time including Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Beatles, and Duke Ellington – and offers birthday salutes to saxophonist Stan Getz, Haitian star Nemours Jean Baptiste, singer and songwriter Melody Gardot, Buena Vista member Cachaito, and exotica hitmaker Arthur Lyman.

Tuesday, February 3

Global Village marks birthdays of tuba master Bob Stewart and saxophonist John Handy; features music from Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipient Bob Marley and one of this year’s Grammy nominees for Best World Music Album – Anoushka Shankar; and highlights the latest releases from African artists Tony Allen, Orlando Julius, and Dexter Johnson.

Wednesday, February 4

African artists take center stage this time in the Global Village, with music from Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Congolese rhumba master Papa Noel (with French accordionist Viviane A.), Ethiojazz creator Mulatu Astatke, and Nigerian reggae star MajekFashek. Plus some Afrobeat inspired sounds from Australia’s Liberators, and Malian music from guitarist Leni Stern.

Thursday, February 5

Highlights in this visit to the Global Village include kora master Ballake Sissoko, banjo man Bela Fleck, Portuguese fado singer Cristina Branco, a classic from Santana, and music from the Lula Lounge - the hot spot for Latin music in Toronto.

Friday, February 6

Each month, the Global Village New Month/New Music show features the best of new world music releases. Highlights this time include:

Malian stars Boubacar Traore, Kasse Mady Diabate and Samba Toure

The Rough Guide to Psychedelic India and the Indian-inspired brass and drum group Red Baraat

From Europe - Slovakian world-folk group Banda, a Balkan Clarinet Summit, and music of the Mediterranean from Spain’s Jaume Compte & Nafas Ensemble

And a wild romp through Medieval and Renaissance music with Kirk Elliott & the Orchestra of Unmitigated Gaul.
