New Highway Bill Amendment Could Open Jet Fuel Tax Investigation

Congress.gov

Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo wants to know how much tax revenue is going to the federal Highway Trust Fund from the sale of non-commercial jet fuel. He added an amendment on Thursday to a recent highway bill that would investigate the issue.

Taxes on the sale of non-commercial jet fuel have been diverted to the federal government’s Highway Trust Fund since 2005.

According to the National Air Transportation Association, the change was designed to discourage highway diesel fuel users from purchasing aviation jet fuel to avoid paying the higher taxes placed on highway diesel fuel.

Pompeo has successfully added an amendment to a highway bill that would require the Government Accountability Office to study how much money has been diverted away from the aviation industry.

Pompeo says the general aviation community shouldn’t be paying for highway infrastructure. The NATA praised the amendment, saying the funding should be going to the Airport and Airways Trust Fund.

Pompeo says his amendment will allow the aviation industry to better understand the scope of the problem and what can be done to fix it.
