Plus guitar music as well from a solo release by  John Doyle (a former member of Solas), Berlin’s 17 Hippies with special guest guitarists Marc Ribot and Jakob Ilja, guitarists Beppe Gambetta & Tony McManus, Spanish guitarist Carlos Timon, and, for the May Golden Age of African music feature, classic guitar bands from Senegal (Orchestra Baobab) and Tanzania (Orchestra Super Volcano).

Plus new music from Latin jazz percussionist Ray Mantilla, Red Baraat, and the 25th anniversary reissue of Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum.

The Golden Age of Discos Fuentes compilations, and some contemporary classical sounds from the album, Guitar Music of Colombia.

Global Village heads to Italy for a variety of different sounds from pioneering neo-folk accordionist Riccardo Tesi, the Napoli Mandolin Orchestra (with spaghetti western music!), Stefano Saletti with his Piccola Banda Ikona group, folk & jazz saxophonist Enzo Avitabile, and the traditional pipes groups Zampogneria. Plus the latest from Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, Quadro Nuevo with Cairo Steps, and Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca.

Friday, June 2

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of new world music releases, and among the highlights this time:

Zaire 74 – the first release of the African artists who appeared at the music festival held in advance of the famous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ Ali-Foreman fight

Pop Makossa – featuring the lively sounds of ‘70s Cameroon

Afrobeat legend Tony Allen’s tribute to legendary jazz drummer Art Blakey

The first new album in eight years from the great Malian singer Oumou Sangare

An eclectic new Latin jazz set from percussionist Ray Mantilla

And reggae from roots revivalists Morgan Heritage, reggae veterans teamed up as the Kingston All Stars, a reissue of a classic dub set from Tommy McCook & the Aggrovators, and Latin classics done reggae style from Ozomatli.
