New music from Nigeria, Spain and Spanish Harlem + a final fling with accordions!

Monday May 26

Global Village remembers Buena Vista Social Club pianist Ruben Gonzalez and Brazilian accordionist Sivuca for their birthdays. Plus new music from Monty Alexander’s Harlem-Kingston Express, Bobby Sanabria’s Que Viva Harlem!, and Yaaba Funk.

Tuesday May 27

Global Village highlights some rockin’ accordion this time – including music from Brave Combo, Tom Waits, and conjunto legend Flaco Jimenez with both the Texas Tornados and Ry Cooder. Plus the latest world music project from Kronos Quartet, and new music from Germany’s Bahama Soul Club and Nigeria’s Beautiful Nubia & the Roots Renaissance Band.

Wednesday May 28

Women in world music featured this time in the Global Village – including acclaimed Malian singer Oumou Sangare, contemporary African vocal group Zap Mama, Finland’s Varttina, violinist Regina Carter, the Barefoot Diva of Cape Verde – Cesaria Evora, and the Queen of Salsa – Celia Cruz.

Thursday May 29

New tango and new flamenco styles featured this time in the Global Village, with music from the Gipsy Kings, Calaita Flamenco Son, and two master accordionists (for the May feature) – Astor Piazzolla and Richard Galliano. Plus the new Ultimate Guide to Irish Folk and a classic from Argentine saxophonist Gato Barbieri.

Friday May 30

Global Village marks the birthday of acclaimed Latin percussionist Armando Peraza with music he did under his own name and with Santana and soul jazz organist Charles Kynard.  Plus our final fling with world accordions, including music from Le Primitifs du Futur (with R. Crumb), Argentina’s Chango Spasiuk, Roma rock band Kal and Germany’s Quadro Nuevo.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
