New Traffic Safety Measures Implemented In Old Town

New traffic-control measures are coming to Old Town.

The Wichita Police Department will block vehicle traffic in certain sections of Old Town on Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. until 3 a.m.

It’s an effort to increase pedestrian and motorist safety during the area’s busiest bar hours. Capt. Jose Salcido says the changes are part of the department's ongoing work to make Old Town safer.

“It just makes your entertainment a lot nicer when people can just criss-cross and walk from bar to bar," he says. "We thought that would be an improvement to enjoyment of Old Town.”

Rock Island and North Mosely will be closed from just north of Douglas Avenue up to Second Street, but parking lots will remain open and accessible. The southeast corner of St. Francis and Second Street will be a designated parking area for party buses, Ubers and taxis.
