The Independent Living Resource Center in Wichita is hosting a celebration Wednesday recognizing the 25th Anniversary of the American Disabilities Act.
The federal legislation, signed by President George H.W. Bush in July of 1990, extends civil rights protections to individuals with physical or mental disabilities including in the areas of employment and public accommodations.
Independent Living Resource Center Manager and ADA certified coordinator Shawn Walters says city representatives will talk about ADA accessibility in the community, "and how Wichita is looking to improve certain aspects of that.
"Then we’re also going to be honoring several local businesses presenting them with awards if they’ve done their part with making their business accessible for people with disabilities."
Businesses to be honored include LaQuinta Inn West, Slumberland Furniture and the Wichita Public Library.
The Independent Living Resource Center in Wichita assists more than 7000 consumers a year with 51 percent of their workforce living with disabilities.
The celebration takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Independent Living Resource Center.
