Tuesday 11.3.15

Night Train explores some jazz with international influences tonight – including music from Lebanese oud player Rabih Abou-Khalil, African guitarist Lionel Loueke, the Latin jazz side of guitarist Steve Khan, flamenco-jazz trumpeter Greg Duncan, the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet, and the Bobby Matos Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble. Plus some “good vibes” from vibraphonists Gary Burton (2016 NEA Jazz Master), Joe Locke, Stefon Harris and Christian Tamburr.

Wednesday 11.4.15

Night Train celebrates the birthday of legendary Latin percussionist Carlos “Patato” Valdes, with music he did under his own name, as a member of the Conga Kings, and as a guest artist with Grant Green, Kenny Dorham and Dizzy Gillespie. Plus more in a week-long tribute to vocalist Mark Murphy who recently passed away – the November feature celebrating the centennial birthday of pianist, arranger and composer Billy Strayhorn and the newly named 2016 NEA Jazz Masters – Gary Burton, Pharoah Sanders, and Archie Shepp – and new releases from guitarist Bruce Forman, drummer Steve Johns, Lorraine Feather, and Andrea Brachfeld.

Thursday 11.5.15

Night Train celebrates the birthday of trumpeter Diego Urcola. Born in Argentina and educated at the Berklee College of Music, Urcola has gone on to win three Grammy nominations and work with an impressive number of artists. We’ll hear him as a leader and with Paquito D’Rivera and the Caribbean Jazz Project. Plus a final round of music in our week long tribute to singer Mark Murphy, and more November featured artist music from Billy Strayhorn (including music from a rare release under his own name) and from the newly named 2016 NEA Jazz Masters.
