An officer involved shooting in Wichita has left one suspect in serious condition and another in police custody.

According to the Wichita Police Department, two men allegedly refused to pull their car over and led officers on a chase, which ended in an alleyway near the intersection of Wichita and Water streets. According to police, one suspect fled on foot and the other reversed the car, accelerating towards three police officers. The officers fired on the suspect, hitting him in the hand, abdomen and leg. The suspect was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis where he is in serious condition.

The other suspect was found nearby and taken into custody.

Interim Police Chief Nelson Mosley says a loaded handgun was found near one of the suspects.

The three officers have been put on administrative leave, which is department policy after an officer involved shooting takes place.

The three officers were not wearing body cameras, according to Mosley. He says the department is still in the process of purchasing the devices.

The officers’ tenures are as follows: 2 1/2 years, 2 years and 6 months.

Mosley says the first officer attempted to pull the vehicle over after a similar make and model had been reported stolen on Friday.

He says the officer wasn’t aware that the reported vehicle was actually recovered on Saturday morning.

“The car was not listed as an actively stolen vehicle at the time of this incident,” Mosley said in a press conference on Monday.

The Wichita Police Department says the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office will review the incident.
