Global Village remembers one of the great voices of African music, Papa Wemba, for his birthday. (The international music world was shocked by his sudden passing while performing on stage on April 24th of this year). The show features music from Zaiko Langa Langa, a popular group he co-founded and where he first rose to stardom; with his acclaimed Viva La Musica lineup; as a special guest with Manu Dibango and as part of the Big Blue Ball project from RealWorld; and in covers of his songs from Africando and Juan Luis Guerra.

Wednesday, June 15

Global Village highlights some guitars from around the globe – including the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet; gypsy jazz guitarist Adrian Raso with the gypsy brass band, Fanfare Ciocarlia; 17 Hippies Play Guitar with guest guitarists Mark Ribot and Jacob Ilja; classical guitarist Liona Boyd; and African fusion guitarist Leni Stern.

Thursday, June 16

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Femi Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend Fela. Plus more music of the Silk Road for the June feature – this time from Uzbek star Yulduz Usmanova  - and new reissues from Ebo Taylor and Fela with his early band, Koola Lobitos.

Friday, June 17

Global Village explores some contemporary English and Irish folk artists and recordings – including music from Polka Works, Martin & Eliza Carthy, the Elizabethan Session, the Gloaming, the Imagined Village, and Altan. Plus some traditionally inspired music from Central Europe from Slovakia’s Banda and Hungary’s Marta Sebestyan.
