Planning Underway For $70M Newton Real Estate Development

http://www.newtonkansas.com

A $70 million real estate development that would include retail space and a retirement community could be coming to Newton.

Occidental Management, the same company that is renovating Wichita’s Union Station, currently has plans for an 80-acre development along Kansas Street in south Newton.

It would include two 60,000-square-foot spaces for big-box stores, smaller storefronts for retail and restaurants and a senior living center.

“You know, it’s a great community, and we think there’s some opportunity to do a nice development there," says Occidental Management CEO Gary Oborny. "We’re working through that process right now with the city to see if, economically, it will work.”

The city of Newton still needs to approve infrastructure and street improvements at the location, which Occidental Management already owns.

Oborny says the development, slated for an area with a brand new YMCA, has gotten a lot of positive feedback.

As for now, there’s no timetable for the project going forward.
