At Play: 2014 Preview

Wichita Community Theatre will present Inherit The Wind January 23 through February 9. The classic play dramatizes the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial. Written in 1955, the play is traditionally seen as a discussion of McCarthyism.

Wichita Center for The Arts will present Clybourne Park February 12-16. Written in response to Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, this Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play opens in 1959 as a community struggles to accept a black family moving into an all-white neighborhood. As the plot progresses to 2009, the same (but now predominately black) neighborhood addresses modern racial issues and gentrification as a white couple attempts to buy the same home.

Mosley Street Melodrama presents Derbysville: The Town of Misfit Toys now through December 30, along with the A Very Mosley Christmas Musical Comedy Revue. JR Hurt’s Wild Rebel Angels on Wheels or Heck’s Angels in Haysville will begin the theatre’s 2014 season in February.

The Crown Uptown also has a promising season ahead of it with productions of Godspell, I Love A Piano: The Music of Irving Berlin, and Shrek: The Musical on the horizon.
