At Play: Everything's Coming Up Musicals

Opening June 28, it’s Cabaret Old Town’s production of Knockin’ ‘Em Dead: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Whodunit. When the murder of popular aging actor Victor Boisington happens backstage at the Stage Door Theatre, it's up to Detective Mike Mallet, and the audience to determine which member of the theatre troupe is responsible.

You can see Hairspray at the Crown Uptown now through July 28. Set in 1962 Baltimore, this musical tells the story of plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream to dance on a local TV dance program. When she wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray winner of eight Tony Awards and rich with social commentary on American life in the 1960s.

Mosley Street Melodrama presents Tom Frye’s Butch Cassidy and The Can’t Dance Kid or You Polka, You Brought ‘Em now through July 20. The production is paired with Motown Mania: Musical Comedy Revue.

Music Theatre of Wichita presents Les Miserable June 26 through the 30.
