Featuring many of the soulful sounds that made Robinson’s previous band, the Black Crowes, memorable, CRB adds flourishes of psychedelic music and the sounds of late 1970s FM radio. In 1994, the newly-formed Gov’t Mule retired to Tel-Star studios in Brandon, Florida to cut a series of demos. Although the individual members had established themselves as formidable sidemen, there was no telling that the group would continue the legacy of Southern rock well into the new century. Those demos have just been issued as The Tel-Star Sessions we’ll hear selections from that release on this episode of the show as well as music from Rich Robinson’s latest, Flux.

Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle are established singer-songwriters who need no introduction. After years of friendship, the two released their first-ever collaborative effort earlier in 2016. We’ll hear music from that recording as well as music from selections from Lucinda Williams.

The new film Miss Sharon Jones follows the dynamic front-woman through her 2013 battle with cancer and her triumphant return to the stage around the 2014 release of Grammy-nominated album Give The People What They Want. We’ll hear selections from the soundtrack to this film as well as featured music by Aretha Franklin.

Released in 1980, Gentlemen Take Polaroids was the fourth album from the British new wave band Japan. We’ll hear selections from that recording on this episode of the show as well as music from The Cure’s Seventeen Seconds, released the same year.
Monday, August 22
Listen for selections from Lovers, the latest release by Wilco guitarist Nels Cline. Inspired by classic “mood music” records, this double-disc set explores a variety of emotions and reflections on the subject of love.
