'Pres' Day And The Jazz Singers

Monday 2.15.16

Night Train celebrates birthdays of drummer Herlin Riley (with music he did with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ahmad Jamal and on his own new album, New Direction) and songwriter Harold Arlen. Plus a celebration of Presidents’ Day with music from “Pres” – Lester Young – with the focus on his work with Billie Holiday for Night Train's Jazz Singers feature. Plus a Billie Holiday special in hour two, and vocalists Claire Martin (with a Dan Hicks classic), Ernestine Anderson, Gregory Porter, and a new album from vocalist Nicolas Bearde for the February feature as well.

Tuesday 2.16.16

Night Train highlights more jazz singers for the February feature  – this time including Barbara Morrison and Nnenna Freelon. Plus new music from Brian Andres & the Afro-Cuban Cartel, vibist Christian Tamburr, and pianist Larry Novak - and birthday salutes to Latin jazz pioneer Machito and saxophonist Jeff Clayton – including a Savannah Music Festival special in hour two with the Clayton Brothers.

Night Train continues the February Jazz Singers feature with music from Abbey Lincoln’s salute to Billie Holiday, The Royal Bopsters with Bob Dorough, and Cyrille Aimee from her new album. Also the first of a three-part Jazz Profiles series on Jazz in Song – with part one devoted to ‘the words,’ showcasing both great lyricists and great lyric interpreters in jazz. Plus birthday salutes to pioneering bebop clarinetist Buddy DeFranco and AACM flutist Nicole Mitchell.

Thursday 2.18.16

Night Train highlights more vocalists for the February feature – including birthday artists Randy Crawford and Irma Thomas – along with new releases from singers Karrin Allyson, Sarah King with the Smoke Rings, and Charanee Wade as a special guest on Oran Etkin’s recent tribute to Benny Goodman.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
