Monday, May 16

Global Village features music from African women across the continent – including Nigeria’s Lijadu Sisters, Western Sahara’s Aziza Brahim, Mauritania’s Noura Mint Seymali, Les Amazones de Guinee, and “Mama Africa” herself – South Africa’s Miriam Makeba.

Tuesday, May 17

Global Village explores the world music side of Taj Mahal’s music for his birthday; highlights new music from L.A’s contemporary pan-Latin band Buyepongo, Colombia’s Sidestepper, and the Rough Guide to a World of Psychedelia; and continues the May ‘Music of India’ feature with music from Sameer Gupta and Simon Thacker’s Svara Kanti.

Wednesday, May 18

In this special edition of Global Village, music from recent 2016 UK Award winners from both the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and Songlines’ Eight Annual World Music Awards. Among the artists featured: Joan Armatrading, the Rheingans Sisters, Sam Lee, Sandy Denny, Rhiannon Giddens, Seckou Keita, Debashish Bhattacharya and more.

Global Village marks the birthday of Grace Jones with the world music side of her work; continues with more music from India for the May feature (this time with  Anoushka and Ravi Shankar with Karsh Kale, and Indian slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya with special guest John McLaughlin); and highlights new music from the Alma Afrobeat Ensemble and Sociedade Recreativa.

Friday, May 20

Global Village celebrates birthdays of jazz bagpiper Rufus Harley, jazz inspired Cape Verdean singer Carmen Souza, and jazz inflected new tango bandaneonist Dino Saluzzi. Plus new music from the Latin jazz group Brian Andres & the Afro Cuban Jazz Cartel, and for the May Music of India feature, a new album from Indian sarodist Amjad Ali Khan with U.S. based Iraqi oud player Rahim Alhaj.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
