With the recount of last week’s votes for a Sedgwick County Commission race now complete, Commissioner Richard Ranzau remains the winner of the Republican primary for the 4th District.
Sixteen election workers spent two days hand-counting 6,951 ballots cast in the Aug. 7 primary. The Board of Canvassers met Friday afternoon to certify the election results and declare Ranzau the winner.
Ranzau’s opponent, Hugh Nicks, paid $1,000 as surety bond for the recount after final tallies put him within 75 votes, or about 1 percentage point, of Ranzau. Nicks received 3,438 votes and Ranzau received 3,513 votes. The numbers did not change after the recount.
Sedgwick County commissioners are part of the canvassing board but Ranzau did not participate in the recount proceedings.
In a letter to Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman, Nicks asked that Ranzau recuse himself from the recount panel.
Ranzau will face Democrat Lacey Cruse in the November general election. Cruse beat Michael Kinard with 57 percent of the vote to win the Democratic primary last week.
