Global Village highlights some ‘roots’ sounds this time – including the song “Roots,” the B-side of a single from Bob Marley and the Wailers, roots albums from Ivory Coast’s Tiken Jah Fakoly (a 2015 Global Village favorite) and Brazil’s JoyceMoreno, and an Iberian roots project from El Naan (one of the picks for Best of 2015 from the Transglobal World Music Chart).

Global Village highlights more of the Best of 2015 for the January feature – this time including a 2015 EP that marked the return of acclaimed Malian band Les Ambassadeurs along with show favorites from the Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra, Ludovico Einaudi and Tipsy Oxcart. Plus birthday salutes to ska pioneer Roland Alphonso and world-jazz trumpeter and guitarist Olu Dara.

Global Village continues the January Best of 2015 feature with music from Lion Songs, the companion CD to a Global Village favorite book of the past year – a biography of Thomas Mapfumo also titled Lion Songs; Taraf de Haidouk’s 25th anniversary album, and Mali’s Samba Toure. Plus a birthday salute to Don Snow/Jonn Savannah with music he did with Squeeze and Van Morrison, and recent music from the Jack Radics, Tom Teasley and Saor Patrol from The Ultimate Guide to Scottish Folk.
Thursday, January 14
Global Village pays tribute to one of the giants of Crescent City music, Allen Toussaint, on his birthday. The program highlights music from his rare albums in the ‘70s to later projects, including the Grammy-nominated release, "The River in Reverse", which he did with Elvis Costello. Plus New Orleans R&B classics he wrote and produced for Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey and others, and covers of his songs from Robert Palmer, the Band, the Pointer Sisters and more.

Global Village highlights some world folk rock from Newfoundland’s Great Big Sea, banjoist Jayme Stone and singer Linda Thompson, and also some modern ‘exotica’ from Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica and TriBeCaStan.
