Remembering Allen Toussaint, Celebrating Thanksgiving, Music Of France & More Music From Ethiopia

Monday, November 23

Global Village celebrates birthdays of one of Spain’s greatest composers, Manuel de Falla, Italian minimalist Ludovico Einaudi, and Balkan blues (and more) artist Koby Israelite. Plus more music from Ethiopia for the November feature – this time including new music from the group Qwanwa – and new music from ‘desert blues’ band Terakaft, flamenco/North African music of Seffarine, Canada’s Soul Jazz Orchestra, and the wild and wooly world jazz ensemble TriBeCaStan.

Tuesday, November 24

Global Village pays tribute to one of the giants of Crescent City music, Allen Toussaint, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 77. The program highlights music from his rare albums in the ‘70s and later projects, including the Grammy-nominated release, The River in Reverse, that he did with Elvis Costello. Plus New Orleans R&B classics he wrote and produced for Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey and others, and covers of his songs from Robert Palmer, the Band, the Pointer Sisters and more.

Wednesday, November 25

One of the more exciting developments in both jazz and world music has been the meeting of those two genres in music created by artists from around the globe. Global Village explores some of those fusions in music from South Africa’s Hugh Masekela, Indian jazz fusion group the Arun Ramamurthy Trio, Haitian jazz ensemble Mozayik, Morocco’s Majid Bekka – and from the jazz side, Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, and Brad Goode.

Thursday, November 26

Global Village serves up a feast for the holiday with songs about food. On the menu, Rice, Red Beans and Turnip Greens, Sweet Pumpkin, Hot Cross Buns with some Frim Fram Sauce and other musical delicacies.

Friday, November 27

Global Village heads to France for a wide array of sounds from that country – from traditional to contemporary French music, and some of the many artists from other parts of the globe who call France home.  Among the artists featured – musette accordionist Michel Macias , jazz accordionist Richard Galliano, DJ and producer St. Germain, former Zawinul Syndicate member Aziz Sahmaoui, French ‘Mediterranean blues’ artist Titi Robin, Paris-based Vietnamese artists Huong Thanh & Nguyen Le, soukous star Kanda Bongo Man, and contemporary bands Lo’Jo and L’Attirail.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
