Remembering Eddie Hinton + Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm Live

June 16/18

June 15th marked the birthday of soul cult favorite Eddie Hinton. A singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer and session player, Hinton never won public acclaim during his lifetime, but since his passing has been recognized as a brilliant songwriter, powerful singer, and remarkable soul artist.

He also had connections to the Crossroads June dual feature of Memphis Soul and Gregg Allman, having appeared on a number of Stax classics and worked with Gregg and Duane Allman before the Allman Brothers Band was formed (he was invited to join, but declined the offer).

We’ll hear some of his best recordings, guest appearances (with Boz Scaggs, Mavis Staples, and the Hourglass) and covers of his songs (from Dusty Springfield, and Bettye LaVette).

Then, in hour two of the show and in conjunction with the Memphis Soul feature, it’s a Beale Street Caravan special with Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm, paying tribute to the classic sound of the Hi label from Memphis and featuring musicians who were part of the legendary Hi Rhythm Section, the house band on so many of that label’s hits.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
