Remembering Larry Coryell & Celebrating Mardi Gras

Monday 2.27.17

Night Train pays tribute to fusion pioneer and jazz guitar great Larry Coryell with music he did as a leader and guest on albums from across his six-decade long career in hour one - including his first appearance on record with Chico Hamilton on Dealer, the pioneering fusion albums Duster (with Gary Burton), Spaces and Aspects (with the Eleventh House) , acoustic solo and duet projects and more. Then in hour two, a special performance from Coryell and his band in a lively set of originals and standards.

Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Mardi Gras with music from the Crescent City – including Dirty Dozen, Rebirth and Olympia Brass Bands, legendary New Orleans’ native Louis Armstrong,  the New Orleans Social Club, Mardi Gras Indian & funk group Cha Wa, Delfeayo Marsalis, and in hour two of the show, a special with Wynton Marsalis.

Wednesday 3.1.17

Night Train kicks off the March feature – highlighting music from this year’s Wichita Jazz Festival lineup – with music from headliner Pat Metheny. Plus birthday salutes to guitarist Ralph Towner (including music from his new album, My Foolish Heart, and with the group he co-founded, Oregon), trombonist Benny Powell (as a leader and with Randy Weston), and Brazilian bassist Nilson Matta, including a live performance he did with Trio da Paz at the Newport Jazz Festival in hour two of the show.

Thursday 3.2.17

Night Train marks birthdays of bluesy tenor man Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis, drummer Clarence Penn, and guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel; highlights new music from Ben Sidran, Joey DeFrancesco, and Tom Harrell; and continues with the March feature of music from Pat Metheny and other artists at this year’s Wichita Jazz Festival – tonight including Matt Wilson, Martin Wind, and Alaturka.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
