With the month drawing to a close, Global Village highlights a bit more of the Best of 2016 (the January feature), this time highlighting Grammy nominees, including world-influenced releases nominated in a such categories as Contemporary Instrumental, Folk, Roots, Reggae and Jazz. Among the artists featured are Snarky Puppy, Rhiannon Giddens, Raging Fyah, Trio da Paz and a Global Village favorite as well, Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. The show also features a few more Global Village favorites (Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, the Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra, Breabach and Djelimady Tounkara) and remembers Maggie Roach of the Roches with music from the sisters’ remarkable, Robert Fripp-produced debut album.

Global Village wraps up its look back at the Best of 2016 with a program devoted to this year’s Canadian Folk Music Awards nominees and winners, showcasing some of the very best of that country’s world, traditional and contemporary folk performers. Among the artists featured are the Sultans of String, Duane Andrews, Willy Rios, Kaia Kater, Vishten, the East Pointers, Fasta, Ozere, and Ten Strings & a Goat Skin.
Wednesday, February 1
Some fathers and sons (and a few other relations) are featured in this visit to the Global Village – including critically acclaimed kora player Toumani Diabate with cousins Mamadou Diabate and Ballake Sissoko, and with his father and son, both named Sidiki. Plus Fela’s son Seun Kuti heading up his father’s Egypt 80 band, Cuban piano greats father Bebo and son Chucho Valdes, and as we kick off February’s Bob Marley feature, some music from his children Ziggy and Cedella Marley, along with a Wailers' classic off a solo project from Peter Tosh.
Thursday, February 2
Global Village celebrates birthdays of bossa nova pioneer Stan Getz, exotica hitmaker Arthur Lyman, Buena Vista bassist Cachaito, and legendary Haitian compas founder Nemours Jean-Baptiste. Plus more music from the Roches as the show pays tribute to Maggie Roche throughout the week, and a classic track from Bob Marley for the February feature.
