Restaurant Review: Fork & Fennel

Fork & Fennel

I’m breaking one of my cardinal rules for reviewing.

I don’t usually talk about restaurants that are newly opened, because it takes a bit of time for a new place to work out kinks and service and other random things. But I can’t help it this time, because the Fork & Fennel, in College Hill, is so exciting that I can barely contain myself.

The menu at the Fork & Fennel is not extensive, but everything I have tried is delicious. Last week, I shared the seared scallops and pork belly as an appetizer. Both were crunchy on the outside and meltingly juicy on the inside. My friend had the Fork burger, a combination of Creekstone beef and Red Wattle pork, on a soft, flavorful bun, with pickled onions. I stole a bite. It was so good. The potato chips are fried in house, crisp and tasty.

I ordered the coq au vin, and it was lovely. Chicken thigh and leg, simmered in red wine and flavorful vegetables and herbs, on fettuccine. Intense flavors, no fear of fat, and I’m still thinking about it. You can order it with rabbit, if you like. Lapin au vin. Just say that three times and click your heels.

Everything that can be is locally sourced and Ms. Schane Gross, proprietor, does her best to make sure of that. The cocktails are amazing and, along with the selection of wines, complement the menu well. Appetizers and shared plates are great. I recommend the tear-and-share baguette with three different spreads, and, if you like anchovies, the white anchovy crostini is delicious. The marinated olives are lemony and herbaceous and fun to eat. Be prepared to use your fingers, and lick them.
