Scores Of Birthdays – Many Playing with John Scofield + A Final Feature Look @ The Kenton Singers

Monday 11.27.17

Night Train marks the birthdays of pianist Jacky Terrasson, trumpeter Randy Brecker, composer and bandleader Maria Schneider and for Jimi Hendrix’ birthday a cover of one of his songs from the Hudson lineup with John Scofield. Also new music from Pat Martino, Ben Allison and Behn Gillece, and in hour two for the cool jazz singers feature, a special with singer and pianist John Proulx.

Tuesday 11.28.17

Birthday salutes on Night Train tonight for singer Ethel Ennis, saxophonists Gigi Gryce and Gato Barbieri, and bassist Dennis Irwin (with John Scofield’s band). Plus new music from Chuck Owen & the Jazz Surge,  and pianist Danny Grissett, and for the November cool jazz singers feature, a special in hour two featuring singer Madeleine Peyroux.

Wednesday 11.29.17

Birthday artists featured tonight on the Night Train include drummers Adam Nussbaum and Billy Hart, pianist and composer Billy Strayhorn, and Crescent City trad jazz clarinet master Dr. Michael White – who is also featured in a Music Inside Out special in hour two of the show. Plus the latest from the Tardo Hammer Trio, Verve Jazz Ensemble, and Houston Person.

Night Train wraps up the November Cool Jazz Singers feature with singers from the Stan Kenton Orchestra, home to several of the vocalists who helped shape that sound. We’ll hear orchestra and solo recordings from Chris Connor, June Christy, Kay Brown, Ann Richards, and Anita O’Day, plus Kenton tribute albums, and in hour two of the show, a Jazz Profiles special on Anita O’Day.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
