The Sedgwick County Commission agreed on Wednesday to allow the Division of Corrections to submit a $3 million grant to the state.
The money would be used for five programs which are designed to prevent and address juvenile delinquency. Three of the programs, which constitute the majority of the grant, are for programs operated by the state, including the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center (JIAC).
"JIAC is the first contact many youths have with the juvenile justice system in Sedgwick County," says Sedgwick County's Deputy Director of the Division of Corrections Steve Stonehouse. "JIAC tries to assist youths from getting deeply involved in the juvenile justice system by providing effective assessment and referral services 24 hours a day."
The five commissioners voted to approve the application, and if awarded, accept the monies from the Kansas Department of Corrections.
