The Wichita-based PBS station, KPTS, is launching a new annual award to recognize individuals and businesses that support veterans.
The new award is called the Robert J. Dole Distinguished Service Award, and the first recipient, former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole, will accept the award at a November ceremony.
Dole received two purple hearts and a Bronze Star for his military service.
KPTS President Michele Gors says Dole’s many years of work on behalf of veterans in the U.S. Senate helped ensure veterans were protected.
"He has worked tirelessly to help make sure that veterans have the health care that they need and that they deserve," Gors says. "That’s why the VA hospital here in Wichita is named after him."
Dole was also instrumental in the creation of the National World War II Memorial in Washington.
Gors says the station will work with the community to select its yearly recipients for the service award. She anticipates recognizing veterans, businesses and civilians who have been supportive of military personnel and their service.
Dole’s award will be presented during KPTS’ “Veterans Day: Stories of Service” event on November 11. A banquet is set for the Beech Activity Center in Wichita.
