September Feature Jane Bunnett, Labor Day Celebrations & Horace Silver Birthday Salute

Monday 9.1.14

Night Train marks Labor Day with some jazz songs about work; celebrates birthdays of pianist Gene Harris, keyboardist Wayne Horvitz, singer Terri Thornton, and saxophonist Art Pepper; and kicks off a new month’s feature of music from soprano sax and flute player and explorer of a wide range of Cuban jazz, Jane Bunnett. Plus, a Labor Day special in hour two of the show highlighting Popular Songs on the Picket Line.

Global Village and Strange Currency also feature music for Labor Day tonight.

Tuesday 9.2.14

Night Train marks birthdays of new tango pianist and Astor Piazzolla band member Pablo Ziegler, Crescent City guitarist Steve Masakowski, Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, and also the legendary Horace Silver – with a special Silver tribute concert in hour two of the show with an all-star cast that includes Cedar Walton, Andy Bey, Randy Brecker, Dee Dee Bridgewater, George Coleman, Joe Lovano and more. Plus September featured artist Jane Bunnett with one of the rising stars of contemporary Latin jazz, Elio Villafranca, and new music from the Afro Bop Alliance and Kansas jazz educator Chris Greco.

Wednesday 9.3.14

Night Train marks the birthday of much-in-demand guitarist Peter Bernstein with music he did as a leader, and with Lou Donaldson, Pete Zimmer and Dr. Lonnie Smith, along with appearances on new albums from Jimmy Cobb, Mike LeDonne, and Larry Goldings. Plus music from September featured artist Jane Bunnett –from her albums Ritmo+Soul, In Dew Time, The Water Is Wide, and Radio Guantanamo.

Thursday 9.4.14

Night Train continues with more music from September featured artist Jane Bunnett, with music from her new album with Maqueque and from her second album, New York Duets, with Don Pullen. Plus new music from the Fred Hersch Trio, Charlie Apicella & Iron City and the forthcoming release from the Miami Jazz Project – and birthday salutes to gypsy jazz guitarist Bireli Lagrene, soul jazz organist Gene Ludwig, veteran saxophonist Dave Liebman, and band leader, composer and arranger Gerald Wilson – including a special in hour two focusing on his inventive big bands of the ‘40s through the ‘60s.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
