Jim Lauderdale is one of the most prolific voices in Americana music, whether writing songs for George Strait, Dixie Chicks or with longtime Grateful Dead collaborator Robert Hunter or making albums with kindred spirit Buddy Miller, Lauderdale never seems at a loss for music. His latest recording is a two-disc release, under the title Soul Searching. These are two distinct volumes, recorded with the help of Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, tracked in two Tennessee cities, Memphis and Nashville. Not simply a split between country and soul, this recording offers us a deeper look at Lauderdale’s one-of-a-kind musical vision. We’ll hear selections from both the Soul Searching volumes as well as music from The Excuses, the latest project from prolific Kansas-based musician John Eberly.

String Quartet Live! is the latest release from Jupiter One/Of Montreal violinist KishiBashi. The record, as the title promises, was recorded live with a string quartet and features live renditions of songs from recent KishiBashi releases as well as one Talking Heads cover. We’ll hear selections from this recording as well as music from the new double release by Finland’s Husky Rescue.

Released in 1976, Black Rose was the second album from Eagles cohort JD Souther. Featuring an all-star cast including David Crosby, Little Feat’s Lowell George, bass legend Stanley Clarke and longtime friend Don Henley, the record is a 1970’s Southern California singer-songwriter record with hints of jazz and traces of classical influence. We’ll hear selections from that as well from Jackson Browne’s second album, For Everyman.

Musician/composer Frank Zappa would have turned 75 today. We’ll hear selections from a variety of releases under his name as well as some of the musicians who influenced him, including Johnny “Guitar” Watson and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown.
