South American Jazz & Birthdays Of Elvis Costello, Cesaria Evora & Joseph Shabalala

Monday, August 24

Global Village explores South American jazz – including new music from the Gabriel Alegria Afro Peruvian Sextet, Colombian percussionist Samuel Torre, and Forro in the Dark’s new project combining Brazilian influences with the music of John Zorn. Also Brazil’s Carlos Barbosa-Lima and Jovino Santos Neto, Diego Urcola and Dino Saluzzi from Argentina, and some “false Bahians” who play jazz-choro called Grupo Falso Baiano.

Tuesday, August 25

Global Village marks birthdays of Elvis Costello, Willie DeVille (of Mink DeVille) and jazz legend Wayne Shorter (with music from Weather Report & the Native Dancer project with Brazil’s Milton Nascimiento). Plus we dip a toe into Mare Nostrum (Our Sea) -- a massive project from August featured artist Jordi Savall exploring music from across the Mediterranean -- highlight new music from Bolo and the Amplificador compilation, and include a classic from Latin soul jazz percussion master Poncho Sanchez.

Wednesday, August 26

Global Village highlights a different aspect of August featured artist Jordi Savall’s music, with a selection from his Hispania & Japan-Dialogues album. Plus new music from Musette Explosion, Lau, and Next Stop Soweto Vol. 4, and a tip of the birthday hat to Branford Marsalis (guesting with Angelique Kidjo) and Leon Redbone.

Thursday, August 27

Global Village celebrates the birthday of one of the greats of Cape Verdan music, Cesaria Evora, in a special edition of the show that showcases some of her earliest recordings, classic tracks, rare guest appearances, and music from some of the artists with whom she worked and on whom she had an influence.

Friday, August 28

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Joseph Shabalala, the founder, lead singer, and musical director of the acclaimed South African vocal group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo - with music the group did on Paul Simon’s Graceland album and on several releases of their own.  Plus Laetitia Zonzambe, Playing for Change 3, The Rough Guide to Arabic Jazz, and kora master Toumani Diabate with both banjo master Bela Fleck and world-jazz guitarist Leni Stern.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
