Sport Burger

I have found that most people like to talk about food.  If you can’t think of anything clever to say at a party, you can always break the social ice by asking people what they like to eat.  It’s a nice way to start a conversation, and you might even learn something.

However, if you want to start a big, huffy debate, just ask your friends what they like in a hamburger.  It seems like everyone has their own idea about what constitutes the perfect burger, and people can get pretty excited about their opinions on the matter.  My sister likes them with a thick smear of mayonnaise, and fairly rare… e.coli be damned. My husband wants his with nothing on them but cheese, plain as day.  I prefer mine smallish, with ketchup, mustard, pickle, and onion.  I’ll add cheese if I’m feeling too thin.

My burger of the moment is from Sport Burger, at 134 North Hillside.  It’s a tiny drive through and there is almost always a wait.  You can walk in as well, but be warned, you will smell like their delicious burgers, fries, and grilled onions all day if you do.  Everything is made to order. I always get the same thing- a cheeseburger and fries.

The single cheeseburgers are only 99 cents and they are masterful.  Small patties of juicy beef with the cheese melted into them, on soft buns with grilled onions, ketchup, mustard, and pickle.  They are hot and aromatic from the well-seasoned grill and worth every calorie.  The fries are thick-cut, not too salty, and burn-your-tongue hot. They have other food too, but I have never tried any of it.  The cheeseburger is why I’m there.  It’s perfect, and close to my house.

Wichita has a lot of really great hamburgers to choose from. I have had so many amazing burgers that I’m going to have spread this subject out over several shows.  If you have any suggestions, and can keep the conversation light, please let me know what your favorite burger is, and I will gladly go eat one.
