Springsteen Tribute, Hendrix Reissues And The Return Of A Black Crowe

Tuesday, September 23: Dead Man’s Town is a recreation of Bruce Springsteen’s classic 1984 album Born In The U.S.A.. It features contributions from Blitzen Trapper, Jason Isbell with Amanda Shires, and the North Mississippi Allstars among others. The album was a multimillion seller for Springsteen and a commercial triumph after his under-selling 1982 release, Nebraska. We’ll hear from both recordings on this episode of the show.

Wednesday, September 24: Holy Ghost is the new release from former Black Crowe’s guitarist Marc Ford and is already being hailed as one of the best Americana releases of 2014. We’ll hear selections from it as well from Jason Isbell’s 2013 album Southeastern.

Thursday, September 25: Released in early 1971 The Cry of Love was the first posthumous Jimi Hendrix release. It featured music the guitarist was working on at the time of his death in 1970. A second release, Rainbow Bridge featured more material from the era. Both have just been reissued and we’ll hear selections from each on this episode.

Friday, September 26: Juice is the latest pairing of Medeski, Martin & Wood with guitar legend John Scofield. The four musicians first collaborated in the 1990s on the album A Go Go. This new release continues to blend elements of funk, jazz and rock in an indescribable but highly memorable fashion. We’ll hear from that release as well as from Just Enough Hip to Be Woman, the new album from Oklahoma City’s Broncho.

Saturday, September 27: Popular Problems is the latest release from legendary Canadian poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. The record is the 80-year-old’s 13th album and is the result of a collaboration between him and producer/songwriter Patrick Leonard. We’ll hear from that as well as the new album from John Mellencamp, Plain Spoken.

Monday, September 29: We team with Global Village and Night Train to celebrate International Coffee Day. Listen for selections from John Hiatt, Prince, and Bee Vs. Moth celebrating the caffeinated drink.

Tuesday, September 30: Released in December 1974 Dark Horse was the fifth solo album from George Harrison. Recorded at a low point in the former Beatle’s personal life, the record was called a “soap opera” by one critic and saw Harrison collaborating with a wide range of styles, including funk and soul. The album is included in a new boxed set covering his work between 1968 and 1975. We’ll hear from Dark Horse as well as from Paul McCartney’s 1986 album Press To Play, one of the most poorly received albums from the legendary musician. Despite poor reviews upon its release the record has been embraced by many longtime McCartney fans over the last 25 years.
