St. Patrick’s Day, 17 Hippies, Solas, Cuban Guitars & Les Baxter, Ry Cooder Birthdays

Monday, March 14

Global Village celebrates the birthday of arranger and exotica pioneer Les Baxter; more from March featured artists 17 Hippies (from the Phantom Songs album) and Solas (this time with former band member Karan Casey); and features new music from Snarky Puppy, and Michael Spiro & Wayne Wallace with La Orquesta Sinfonietta.

Tuesday, March 15

Global Village celebrates birthdays of saxophonist Charles Lloyd (including music from his new album, I Long to See You, featuring guitarist Bill Frisell) and of world music innovator Ry Cooder (with music from two of his classic collaborations – with Ali Farka Toure and the Buena Vista Social Club). Plus more from March featured artists 17 Hippies and Solas, and new music from Greece’s Sokratis Sinopoulous Quartet and the blues meets India project from Michael Messer’s Mitra.

Wednesday, March 16

Global Village highlights some Cuban guitarists this time, including acclaimed classical guitarist Manuel Barrueco (from his Cuba! album) and two guitarists associated with the Buena Vista Social Club – Manuel Galban (from his earlier work as guitarist and musical director with the Cuban doo wop group Los Zafiros) and Eliades Ochoa (a preview of his forthcoming album with sister Maria Ochoa and Alma Latina). Plus more guitar music, including a solo release from John Doyle (former member of Solas, who are featured this month) and 17 Hippies (our other March featured group - from their album 17 Hippies Play Guitar with special guests Marc Ribot and Jakob Ilja). There’s also new music  from guitarists Beppe Gambetta & Tony McManus and from Spanish guitarist Carlos Timon, and classic guitar bands from Senegal (Orchestra Baobab) and Tanzania (Orchestra Super Volcano).

Thursday, March 17

Global Village celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with a wide array of Irish sounds, from traditional to contemporary, classic recordings and recent releases. Among the artists featured: Van Morrison, Lunasa, Kila, the Chieftains, Afro Celt Sound System and Altan.

Friday, March 18

Global Village marks birthdays of acclaimed UK folk accordionist Andy Cutting, steel drum player Andy Narell, eclectic guitarist Bill Frisell, and soulman Wilson Pickett. Plus a new 20th anniversary album from March featured artists Solas, and new music from the Haitian band Ram.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
