St. Stephen’s Day In Hungary + Birthdays Of Cristina Pato, Johnny Nash, Ginger Baker & More

Monday, August 17

Global Village celebrates birthdays of Galician piper Cristina Pato, Lebanese oud player Rabih Abou-Khalil, Polish singer Grazyna Auguscik, and saxophonist Ike Quebec. Plus more music from early music master Jordi Savall (this time from his Orient-Occident project) and new music from Colombian harpist Edmar Castanada and Paquito D’Rivera with Quinteto Cimarron.

Tuesday, August 18

Global Village remembers acclaimed dancehall reggae producer and performer Wycliffe “Steely” Johnson on his birthday; highlights more music from August featured artist Jordi Savall; showcases some music from Reunion courtesy of Rene Lacaille; and features new music from Monsieur Doumani from Cypress and M.A.K.U Soundsystem (from the new Rough Guide to Psychedelic Cumbia compilation).

  Wednesday, August 19

Global Village celebrates the birthday of drummer Ginger Baker and American reggae hitmaker Johnny Nash; explores the massive Dinastia Borja project from August featured artist Jordi Savall; and highlights a rare international release from Zambia from Brian Chilala, a new compilation of ‘70s Kenyan pop from Slim Ali & the Hodi Boys, and critically acclaimed Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi’s new Taranta Project.

Thursday, August 20

Global Village celebrates Szent István or St. Stephen’s Day – a major holiday in Hungary that marks the founding of the country. The program highlights a wide array of Hungarian music – from regional and national traditional styles, to contemporary jazz, Balkanbeats and more. Among the artists featured  -  acclaimed vocalist Marta Sebestyen,  award winning saxophonist Viktor Toth, world-jazz pioneer Gabor Szabo, and Sondorgo, a critically acclaimed emerging band on both the Hungarian and world-folk scenes.

Friday, August 21

Global Village travels the New World with music from Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, the Crescent City, and more. Among the highlights – calypso from Maya Angelou, August featured artist Jordi Salvall’s Colombina Songbook featuring music from the library of the youngest son of Christopher Columbus, Simon & Garfunkel’s meditation on “America,” and new music from the Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra, Gao Hong, Buena Vista Social Club, and Nation Beat.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
