Sedgwick County Commissioners have called for a state of emergency after a flash flood caused severe damage in the town of Mulvane last week.
The declaration makes Mulvane eligible for state and federal disaster assistance funding. This is the first time since the Oaklawn Tornado in 2012 that the county has had to declare a state of local disaster emergency.
On Friday, southeast Sedgwick County was hit by several inches of rain in just a couple of hours. Early estimates say Mulvane sustained more than $1 million in damage.
Commission Chair Jim Howell represents the area affected by the floods. He thanked local emergency services for responding so quickly to the disaster.
“But having said that, there’s a lot of hurting people down south," he said. "Hopefully we can get some help for these folks, if possible.”
The American Red Cross and the United Methodist Church have been helping with flood recovery; the Salvation Army is also going to Mulvane to assist people affected by the flood.
