Night Train celebrates the birthday of 2015 NEA Jazz Master Carla Bley, highlights more jazz versions of Stevie Wonder songs for the May feature, and even sneaks in a few tunes for Twilight Zone Day.

Tuesday, May 12

Night Train features more jazz covers of Stevie Wonder songs for the May feature; marks birthdays of bassist Gary Peacock, organist Eddy Louiss, and saxophonist Klaus Doldinger; and showcases a number of new albums from vocalists, including Allan Harris, Chris McNulty, Sarah Partridge, Jose James, and Ernestine Anderson.

Wednesday, May 13

Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Stevie Wonder’s 65th birthday today. It is also the birthday of pianist Red Garland (who worked with Miles Davis and John Coltrane, as well as being a leader of his own groups), pianist, arranger and composer Gil Evans, and up and coming jazz harmonica player Gregoire Maret.

Thursday, May 14

Night Train marks birthdays of early jazz and soprano saxophone pioneer Sidney Bechet and guitarist Bruce Forman – plus new music from trombonist Steve Turre, flutist Sam Most, and organist Pat Bianchi.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
