Best known for the 1984 hit “Obsession,” Los Angeles-based group Animotion had further chart success during that decade, though the band was dormant for much of the 1990s. Reunited in 2001, the outfit has just issued the LP Raise Your Expectations which updates the pop sound that fans have come to love. We’ll hear from this new recording on this episode of Strange Currency as well as music from Clem Snide’s You Were a Diamond

Raised in North Carolina, Sallie Ford has, in recent years, become a cornerstone of the Portland, Oregon music scene. Teaming with producer Mike Coykendall (kirk-en-dahl of M. Ward, She & Him) for her latest release, Ford has delivered a series of songs in tune with her roots but acknowledging a step forward in her musical evolution. We’ll hear selections from this new record, Soul Sick as well as music from Split Lip Rayfield’s On My Way.

We'll remember John Wetton, vocalist and bassist for acts such as King Crimson, Asia and Family among others. The British musician earlier this week at the age of 68 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Monday, February 6

We celebrate the birthday of Bob Marley with selections from throughout his career and cover versions of his music from Jackson Browne, Jim James and others. 

Tuesday, February 7

Released in 1980 Growing Up In Public marked some major changes in singer-songwriter Lou Reed’s life, including his adoption of sobriety. The record features several autobiographical pieces on the subject, including “The Power of Positive Drinking.” We’ll hear selections from that release as well as music from The Claypool Lennon Delirium’s 2016 release The Monolith of Phobos.

Wednesday, February 8

Listen for selections from John Lee Hooker’s It Serves You Right To Suffer as well as selections from the latest release by Bash & Pop.
