Storm Causes An Estimated $300K In Damage

Hugo Phan

City of Wichita crews are continuing to make progress in cleaning up damage from that was caused by a storm on Friday, April 3.

To date, crews have cleared 35 tree limbs blocking streets, repaired or replaced 65 traffic signs, and corrected signal issues at 35 intersections. KMUW’s Abigail Wilson has more…

Last week’s storm resulted in an estimated $250-300,000 in damages to facilities operated by the city.

City of Wichita Strategic Communications Director Ken Evans says the previously stated number is just a starting point.

The estimate itself does not include damage that occurred at Jabara Airport or the new Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport terminal building.

“City staff is working as fast as they can trying to compile all the different damages that have been done to city property, or to areas of city responsibility," Evans says.

The city has extended the offer to allow residents to drop off storm debris at Brooks Landfill through Wednesday, April 8 at 5pm. More than 720 people took advantage of the free dumping on Saturday, which is about ten times the normal volume.
